EXCERPT FROM A RESPONSE RECEIVED FROM THE MORAY DISTRICT COUNCIL (25 Sept., 1980):

"JOHN DUFFUS was born at 237 High Street, Elgin, on 2 May, 1857. In the 1861 census, the family is as follows:

ALEXANDER, age 40, Blacksmith, born in Elgin*

MARGARET, age 38, wife, born in Glasgow

JANE, age 12, daughter

ALEXANDER, age 11, son

JAMES, age 7, son

JOHN, age 3, son**

In 1871 they were still at 237 High Street with the exception of Alexander. James was by this time a cabinetmaker. Alexander Duffus senior died at 237 High Street on 24 February, 1897, aged 81... The two gravestones in the Cathedral are next to each other, which is unlikely to be a coincidence. The brief family tree below shows that James and Alexander were brothers:

JAMES ALEXANDER JOHN ELIZABETH - born: 1813 born: 1815 born: 1820 born: 1828
died: 1886 died: 1897 died: 1836 died: 1892" (Alexander is my Great–great Grandfather while **John is my Great Grandfather )

EXCERPT FROM "MORAYSHIRE DESCRIBED Being A Guide To Visitors" (1868)

(237 High St.) Elgin... 237High St.jpg (18642 bytes)"Next to Murdoch's Wynd, in a recess off the street, is a quaint old house which at one time belonged to the Dunbars of Hillhead, then to James Stephen, Provost of Elgin, who married a daughter of Sir Harry Innes of Innes, latterly to a family of Duffus, who still possess it."

ALSO: Bishopmill (Elgin): "The Lossie is here spanned by a handsome iron bridge, erected in 1831 in place of a stone one which was swept away by the great flood of '29. When this bridge was built, the contract for the iron work was accepted by John Duffus & Co., iron–founders in Aberdeen, who erected the bridge in their own yard – the specifications bearing that it was to be set up, but not specifying where, so that the Road Trustees had to pay them to take it to pieces, carry it to Elgin, and put it up in its proper place!"
