Dear Mr Duffus,

I have received your letter dated 4th March 1996 (how did you get my address?) regarding your family tree. Unfortunately I am not directly related to any of the Duffuses that you mention.

My great grandfather was born illegitimate with the name William
Duffus Clark. I have been told that he found out his father was named
Duffus and so changed his own name to William Clark Duffus.

I was also told that when he was an apprentice tailor, his apprenticeship was paid for by "a house in the Perth Road area". This is where John H. and George Duffus lived. Maybe one of them was his father.

Of coarse I have no conclusive proof of this as the truth will have died with William and his Mother.

One interesting point is that George Duffus had a son called Russell, and William Clark Duffus also had a son by that name.

I took it for granted that my Duffus line started with my great grandfather and therefore never bothered about other Duffuses, but if and when I come across any information I will send it to you.

There is a gravestone in a cemetery on the Perth Road in Dundee, which reads:

There is also a John Duffus (late of the excise) born in Edinburgh, died 20 Sep 1848 aged 70 years, in one of the burial registers.
