Can anyone help with the genealogy of Edward Imerson Horsman, who founded E.I. Horsman Co., a major US manufacturer of dolls. He was born in New York City 11/25/1843 and on 4/22/1869, in Brooklyn, NY, married Florence Lewis Benton (b. 2/29/1848  d. 5/12/09) of Suffolk, MA. He died 5/27/1927,  in NYC, and is buried in Brooklyn. He was  the son of Edward Horsman, grandson of William Horsman and great-grandson of Edward Horsman of Yorkshire, England. William Horsman may have come to Boston from England in 1802. I have some more information, but find it conflicting in some regards and hence not reliable. Can anyone help me sort it out?
Thanks.

Edward Horsman, that is Edward Imeson Horsman Sr., was born in New York City. He had sisters but no brother. He founded the E.I. Horsman
Co., a wholesaling/retailing company, in NYC, which developed into one of the largest  doll making companies in the US. Though out of family control since the late 1920s, Horsman dolls are still sold. His ancestry  originated in Yorkshire, but I know little  about this. Edward's father and grandfather also were named Edward, the later having lived in Boston, where he died in a poorhouse. While I think the Horsman family arrived in Boston in the late 1700s, and probably by  way of Canada, I don't have any information going back to Yorkshire, England.  Please contact me directly if you haveany idea how your family is linked to this famous doll manufacturer. Also I would  appreciate hearing from Richard or anyone else with information about THIS Horsman  line in Yorkshire. I can be contacted directly at [email protected]

Hello David

I do want to thank you very much for the fascinating genealogical information about the Horsman family! You are the first one to reply to my query which I posted so many month ago.

I'd like to reply at some length, and perhaps ask a few questions too. You have filled in a lot of information, particularly in the more recent generations. You have corrected a few errors in the information I have previously gathered. I think I can fill in some gaps in your information. I also must note that there are some discrepancies too between our data, most notably in the earliest generations traced.

First, neither of us has succumbed, I note, to the bogus "guilding of the lily" genealogy that E.I. Horsman Sr. submitted to the NATIONAL CYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY in the 1890s, when he seemingly was trying to impress New York Society with his supposed links to English nobility and, even, the Royal family.

But, that "red herring" aside, let me begin with what I would call Generation No. 0, since it goes back one step further than your information, and by calling that No. 0 it allows me to continue to use your references to Generation Nos.1, 2, 3 etc.
Here is where I believe there are errors...

My starting point is Edward Imeson Horsman Sr., b. 1843. His grandfather, (Generation No. 0) was Edward Horsman (at least 5 consecutive generations had Edward Horsmans, and though I can't prove it, I suspect all were Edward Imeson Horsman). Edward Horsman (the grandfather) was born, I don't know where but perhaps Yorkshire, England, in circa 1775 (calculated back from his death). He was living in Boston in 1800. I suspect that he is the Edward Horsman you list as having received his citizenship on 6 May 1812 in Municipal Court,
Boston.

This Edward Horsman (1875) married Elizabeth Oliver, age 20, in 1800, in Boston. They had four children, the oldest and his namesake, being born in 1802 in Boston. (This would be the father of Edward I. Horsman Sr. (1843), and the one you list in Generation No. 1) Elizabeth died, probably in childbirth, in 1808. The following year, Edward (1875) married his second wife, Mary Barnett, and they would have at least five more children during the following decade. Edward (1875) worked as some type of clerk (? Records refer to him as Genl. Secty.) to a prominent
Bostonian, but apparently he fell on ill health and hard times. In 1819, though only 44, he died in the Boston Poor House.

Edward Horsman (1802) grew up in Boston but, seemingly in the 1830s, moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he was a printer. In April 1839, he married British-born Mary Pearson. With the one exception you cite, which refers to her as Pear, numerous other references are consistent in calling her Mary Pearson, the daughter of Joseph Pearson (rather than Pearman). The similarity between Pear and Pearson and only the single reference to Pear suggests to me that Pear is an erroneous contraction and that Pear is not correct.

Theoretically It is possible that Mary Pearson married somebody named Pear, then was widowed or divorced, and then remarried Edward Horsman. However this does seem somewhat unlikely, and I tend to believe that Pear is an error.

Edward (1802) and Mary would have at least three children... Ellen, born in 1842, Edward Imeson Horsman, born 1843 (later he would be known as E.I. Horsman Sr.), and Emma, born 1849. I have not attempted to trace either of the two sisters, as my interest was in Edward (1843).

I concur with your data on his marriage to Florence Benton, etc. You have the three daughters, Florence, Mary and Eliza, and the son, Edward I.
Horsman Jr. (I have his birthdate as 16 March 1873, rather than 1872). There was a fifth child who apparently died either at birth or as an infant. I know neither the name nor even the sex of this child, believed to have been the first born) I know that Florence had 5 chlidren of whom 4 survived to adulthood.

You list both Florence and Mary as born in 1871. Were they twins? I was of the impression that Mary was younger than Edward Jr., but I do not have a birthday, so I cannot comment knowledgeably about Mary's age.

You list the youngest daughter as Eliza. I have her listed as Connie. I clearly  have confused mother and daugher. Clearly you know a lot about Eliza and I do not. I appreciate that you have cleared this up for me.

Mary had great tribulations as a result of her marriage, albeit brief, to Bobby Appleton. Some of these are recounted in the detailed unpublished journals of Edward Jr. And she, of course, divorced him and remarried Murray Lamont (who usually was known as Bert, and is buried under that name in the family plot in Green-Wood Cemetery)

Edward Jr. (1873), married his "lady fair," Ethel Hull Herrick, as you note. She was the daughter of a prominent broker and former vice president and close associate of Thomas Edison in what would become General Electric. They had a child, Edward I. Horsman III, who died, apparently under the age of 2, and likewise is buried in Green-Wood. You have the information about Edward Jr.'s premature death from a massive heart attack in 1918. Ethel survived him by about 15 years.

You also have the information about E.I. Horsman Sr.'s (1843) death in 1927. As well as the much earlier death of his wife, Florence.

Most of the information about the van Siclen branch I have.

Most of the information about the Wilcox branch I did not, and I appreciate your help in that regard.

It is my understanding that upon the death of their father in 1927, the three sisters, Florence, Mary and (as I now know her), Eliza inherited his estate, not a small amount of money. It also is my understanding that none of the three sisters invested wisely and essentially lost most of their money during the Depression.

I wonder if the name Raynour (or Raynor) Horsman is familiar to you. He, like E.I. Horsman Sr. and Jr., worked in the toy business, and, in fact, worked for them circa WWI. He would have been somewhat younger than E.I. Jr.... perhaps a cousin. I've not been able to figure that one out yet.

Perhaps some of this will have been of interest to you. I know that I appreciate you responding to my query and sending me so much data. If you can answer several of my questions above, I will appreciate that as well. Thank you, and best wishes!

Sincerely,

Don Jensen
