JAMAICAN-BORN Steve Martin and Norman Lindo, representing Florida, were crowned world domino champions after beating Jamaicans Clifford Langley and Oneil Duffus 3-2 in the final at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Hotel last night.

In the most exciting final of the tournament's five-year history, Martin and Lindo ensured that the Air Jamaica World Championship of Dominoes title returned to the US for the second consecutive year.

"I told them that nobody in the world could beat us and tonight we proved it," said an elated Martin, who with Lindo, came from two games down to clinch the thriller 6-2, 6-5, 1-6, 2-6, 2-6.

"I was born to play and now that I am the greatest in the world... nothing feels better," he added.

For their efforts, Lindo and Martin won US$25,000 and the National Bakery trophy, while Duffus and Langley took home US$12,500.

The final, watched by a large Grande Hall audience, brought an end to the three-day championship, which attracted a record 222 participants from 15 Caribbean, North American and South American countries.

In the play-off for third place, Alvin Powell and Charles Smalling from Christiana defeated Rupert Nattoo and Carlton Young of Kingston and Linstead to go home US$7,500 richer.
