REIGNING champions, Hydel, advanced to the final of the Milo-sponsored preparatory schools Alberga Cup football competition following a 2-1 win over St Andrew in the semifinals, at Saints Peter and Paul on Saturday.

The champions, who with the win finished atop Zone B ahead of Lannaman's, won courtesy of a double strike from the competition's leading goalscorer, Chris Waugh, who netted in the eighth and 48th minutes to increase his seasonal tally to 36. Scott Cargill (52) scored for the losing team.

In other Zone B games, Lannaman's, who were hoping for a Hydel upset, defeated Quest 3-1 and Portmore Missionary beat Mona 2-0.

Elsewhere, in the competitive Zone A, Vaz moved a step closer to the final after a 1-0 win over previous zone leaders, Covenant, while Sts Peter and Paul were stunned 1-0 by out-of-contention, Wolmer's.

Covenant, who needed only a draw to book their spot, lost when Vaz's Rohan Roye's struck in the 11th minute.

Vaz, with a rescheduled game in hand against Sts Peter and Paul next Wednesday at Hillel Academy, need only a draw to meet Hydel in the final. However, should they lose, it will result in a three-way tie between Sts Peter and Paul, Covenant and themselves -- on 10 points each.

In other Zone A games of academic interest, Foundation with goals from Wade Duffus and Ramon Whittaker, edged Morris Knibb 2-1, for whom Chris Henry scored.

Meanwhile, the Henriques Cup KO final between Vaz and Wolmer's will be played tomorrow at UWI beginning at 3:30 pm. The final will be preceded by a play-off for third spot between Lannaman's and Mona.
